100% inline control during laser drilling of microvias
Researchers report the development of a laser-based inline process control system to precisely drill microvias in printed circuit boards. This approach allows all microvias in a printed circuit board to be checked non-destructively during manufacturing without the need for follow-up quality tests.

Gentle defibrillation with optogenetics
Defibrillation used in an emergency is based on strong electrical impulses which, if successful, restore a regular heartbeat. A new approach aims at an electric shock energy that is 40 times weaker than before. This was developed with the help of optical modelling and optogenetic tests.

On-chip integration of optical isolators
Until now, optical isolators could not be realised as integrated components. An international team has now succeeded in rotating polarised light through an atomically thin semiconductor. Optical isolators as photonic integrated circuits could thus be made possible in the future.
