Measuring forces in plastics optically
Special dye molecules that can be integrated into plastics change their color depending on their mechanical stress. Researchers are now reporting on the direct optical measurement of the actual forces in a component based on the discoloration. Possible application could lie in 3D printed polymer components.

Biomedical LIBS microscope in a hospital
A microscope for laser-induced plasma spectroscopy is installed in a clinical environment for the first time. Thus, human tissue samples can be chemically analyzed without contact in order to quickly determine poisoning, for example. The system also offers new possibilities for medical diagnostics and fundamental research.

Robot-controlled laser for neurosurgery
Surgeries on the brain are sometimes carried out while the patient is awake in order to provide important control options through interaction with the patient. Fraunhofer ILT has developed a laser system that makes the opening of the skull virtually silent and vibration-free. The robotic control system also makes the process extremely precise.
